ChatGPT, Now With Ads

ChatGPT is the most popular AI chatbot in the world currently, and that is not without reason. With industry-leading performance in general knowledge, coding, and image recognition, and billions of dollars being poured into building datacenters for OpenAI, the lack of a paywall seems too good to be true. However, OpenAI has now begun slowly implementing ads into ChatGPT, starting from early February.

It may seem strange that OpenAI suddenly decided to incorporate ads into its services since many other big names, such as Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, have no ads, but this has actually been a long time coming. The majority of ChatGPT’s millions of users do not pay for ChatGPT, meaning that ChatGPT’s revenue, despite its large user base, is small and entirely subsidized by paid users and OpenAI’s API. Sources such as Fortune say that OpenAI made a net loss of approximately $9 billion last year, with its costs being almost double its revenue (Fortune). Even while making losses, though, OpenAI must continue to offer ChatGPT for free because of the fierce competition within the AI industry.

“With competitors, an AI suddenly being fully paid will make users switch to other AIs, so I just don't think this will be a thing that happens,” said Rishi Gupta (12).

If ChatGPT limits messages or charges a small fee, then most consumers would be inclined to switch to DeepSeek, Gemini, or other free models, because any fee is more expensive than free. The middle ground found by executives at OpenAI is to implement ads, so that they can make profits from the ads while hopefully not driving away customers. Other companies have already begun undermining this policy, with Claude recently dropping an ad campaign specifically pledging that their models will remain ad-free in the foreseeable future.

Ads in ChatGPT will not affect the response that the model produces, but simply append relevant ads to the end. However, ads may influence the responses given by ChatGPT as they could begin targeted advertising using user prompts. When asked how it may affect his use of ChatGPT, Samuel Yang from 12th grade responded,

“Ads wouldn’t dissuade me from using ChatGPT since all I need from it is some level of accuracy with enough reasoning,” said Yang.

Pranesh Saran, also a senior, generally shared this same sentiment on the nuisance that ads may cause. When asked if ads would make him switch from ChatGPT to a model without ads, he responded,

“Possibly, but I have found that ChatGPT is more adept at performing certain tasks than others,” said Saran.

While ads may pose a nuisance, most users are unlikely to switch due to ChatGPT having already been used by many, and it has proved to provide good performance. This may change, though, as ads are more deeply integrated into ChatGPT’s responses because users may find that their trusted responses from ChatGPT are being influenced by advertisements, as the user’s prompt is conveniently related to a certain company’s services.
