The severe destruction in the Gaza Strip and much of the Middle East in the past two years places the Gaza War among the worst humanitarian disasters in history. Despite international outrage and diplomatic efforts, the multifaceted historical conflict continues, though Israel stands more alone than ever. Iran, Lebanon (through Hezbollah), and Yemen (through the Houthi militia) all remain engaged in military action with Israel, and its diplomatic position is continuously being undermined.
Though both Hamas and the Israeli Defense Forces are being accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, the ferocity of Israel’s position on Gaza has drawn severe international backlash. October saw two significant dates for the State of Israel: Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement, or the holiest day on the Jewish calendar) and the second anniversary of October 7th. Despite Israel’s strict emphasis on religious piety on Yom Kippur through shutdown of public services and a strict religious routine, and its public grief for those who died on the October 7th attacks, the Israeli Defense Forces continued to carry out its military operations with its attacks against the Palestinians and the naval blockade, preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Palestinians. Beginning in 2023, satellite technology revealed that Israel’s bombing of Gaza had already surpassed the intensity of civilian attacks from the Second World War. Since then, several countries, especially those in the Middle East, have played a significant role in perpetuating the war and negotiations for peace.
Israel’s policies of targeting civilians, bombing hospitals, and preventing access to humanitarian aid continue to draw severe criticism. In the first week after October 7th, Israel dropped more than 1,000 bombs per day, forcing Palestinians to suffer under the war of attrition. Palestine’s population is also incredibly young; sick and starving children make up much of its population.
Furthermore, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has spread misinformation and false rumors. As of October 2025, the Palestinian death toll has reached around 70,000, with around 170,000 injured according to UN reports, with currently 2 million Palestinians famished or at risk of famine. Israel has also imposed a naval blockade around the Gaza Strip, and the intensification of attacks around the time of Yom Kippur meant that humanitarian organizations couldn’t reach Gaza, and ones that were already within the city walls, such as the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, had to halt their operations to protect their workers.
Most recently, on October 2nd, 2025, hundreds of Israeli police officers were deployed to arrest more than 450 international activists (including several lawmakers) taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which attempted to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Though it didn’t succeed in breaking the blockade, it served as a significant symbolic and political event.
Israel’s global position is becoming increasingly tenuous, as it is faced with increasing diplomatic pressure from its former allies and global superpowers. Germany, the United Kingdom, and Turkey have already halted trade agreements with Israel. The US stands as Israel’s only major ally in the Gaza war, as Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, Spain, and Portugal recently joined the list of 145 countries (including most of the European Union) recognizing the Palestinian State ahead of the UN summit in September of 2025.
These countries, many previous allies of Israel, are now undermining Israel’s authority over the Gaza Strip and its diplomatic position. Especially as Israel and Hamas enter their third negotiated ceasefire, with a peace deal personally led by President Donald Trump. Israel continues to claim that it supports the ceasefire, despite continuing to conduct strikes killing hundreds of people daily in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s isolation poses significant diplomatic questions of whether or not it will finally choose to shift its approach to the Gaza War to end the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip. The war is still ongoing, and Israel still maintains its policies at the cost of its allies.
